Back in 1969, Tony Joe White had a hit song, Polk Salad Annie. After the gator got her granny, it also seemed the gator got Tony Joe. He hasn't been seen on the U.S. charts much since then, although other singers have had hits with songs written by him, particularly "Rainy Night in Georgia."

Along with writing, he's taken his bayou blues from Louisiana to the European charts, worked with Tina Turner on her Foreign Affair album, and toured with Joe Cocker and Eric Clapton.
