Motorola L6 Silver Sliver Sibling

The famous Motorola RAZR "Razor" technology has spawned a number of spinoff cell phones. These include the Motorola PEBL "Pebble", the Motorola SLVR L7 "Sliver" and now the Motorola L6.

With all those great cell phone nicknames, you would think that Motorola would dub their L6 model with a catchy moniker. But Nooooo. It's just known as the Motorola L6. You might be tempted to call it the Silver Sliver because it looks a lot like a SLVR L7. That's because the two phones are both candy bar style packages less than half an inch thick and sporting the etched soft-touch keypad. But there are a few differences.

First of all, the L7 SLVR is a $200 phone, while you can get your new L6 for less than a $50. Why the big difference? The L7 was designed to support iTunes for music on the go. No music player in the L6. The L6 actually has twice the built-in memory of the L7, but doesn't have an expandable memory slot like the SLVR. You typically need a lot of memory to store music.

Both phones sport a VGA quality digital camera that also works as a camcorder. Both have nice color displays, although the SLVR has a slightly larger and higher resolution screen. The L7 is a quad band GSM phone and the L6 is a tri-band phone. That means nothing unless you are traveling overseas and plan to use your cell phone on a foreign network.

Those are the differences that are important to most people. Both phones have Bluetooth capability so you can use a wireless headset. Both have built-in speakerphones and hands-free dialing. You have several modes of messaging, including SMS text messaging, MMS multimedia messaging and instant messaging with AOL, Yahoo! and ICQ instant messaging pre-loaded.

The Motorola L6 is actually slightly smaller and thinner than the L7. It measures just 4.5 inches long by 1.93 inches wide by just 0.43 inches thin. Compare that to a razor's 0.5 inch case that still draws rave reviews. The L6 is also a featherweight in your pocket or purse at just slightly over 3 ounces.

All this performance in a small and lightweight package and you still get great battery life. Talk time is up to 309 minutes or over 5 hours. Standby time is up to 372 hours or over 15 days.

If you like the idea of a great cell phone deal but have a completely different model phone or perhaps a different carrier in mind, find exactly what you are looking for at Cell Phone Plans Finder.

Pink Cell Phone Specials For Mother's Day

Sunday, May 14 is Mother's Day and we've got just the thing to get mom really excited about her day. This is the year of the pink cell phone. Finally, after years of silver phone cases, there's the stylish look of pink and magenta razor phones. Best of all, right now you can get your razor phones free after rebate along with a bonus Bluetooth headset and free 2 day delivery. We've even got a stylish pink Sanyo phone that's available at a bargain price. They're pink and they're ready to surprise your mother or significant other if you act quickly.

Long anticipated, the first of the pink razors appeared as the Motorola RAZR V3 Pink for Cingular Wireless service. Like the classic silver and sleek black razors that came before it, the pink RAZR is engineered into a cast aluminum shell that gives it the strength to support a high technology cell phone in a case that's only half and inch thick. The ultra thin precision crafted keypad is advanced in its appearance and helps to minimize the profile of the pink razor phone. Cingular's Motorola V3 Pink has a VGA quality digital camera and a large 2.2 inch main color display.

The T-Mobile Magenta RAZR is a similar phone with a bright pink aluminum case, digital camera, Bluetooth capability and support for all 4 GSM cellular bands worldwide. The external display has a cool blue backlight. The digital camera has the ability to take both still pictures and short video clips up to 15 seconds long.

Verizon's Pink RAZR V3c is a higher technology version of the original razor phones. The color is more of a subdued frosty pink. The digital camera has been upgraded to 1.3 megapixels, which gives you still pictures good enough to print. The other upgrade is streaming TV style video using Verizon's VCAST service. This add-on service offers you daily news, weather, sports and entertainment shows right on your cell phone screen.

We don't have a pink razor phone for Sprint users, but we can offer you an extraordinary deal on a pretty pink phone from Sanyo. The SCP-3100 Pink is a camera phone in a plastic clamshell case. It only weighs 3 1/2 ounces and slips easily into pocket or purse. This Sanyo beauty gives you a speakerphone, support for text messaging and over 3 hours of talk time.

Here's one more special that can make mother's day even better. Order a shared minutes plan and you can get TWO pink cell phones of your choice at these special deals. It's a perfect deal for mothers and daughters. Buy one for you. Get another for mom. Don't worry, guys. You also have the option of ordering one pink cell phone and a second phone that's a completely different model. A pink RAZR for her. A black RAZR for you.

Sprint Nextel Makes GPS Cell Phones Electronic Nannies

Sprint is launching a new cellular service today called "Family Locator Service" that lets you track the whereabouts of your kids at all times. You pay $9.99 a month to enable your "parent" cell phone so you can track up to 4 rambunctious tykes as they go from school to soccer practice, stopping by the candy store and heading home. You ping the kid's phone and see their current location on a map displayed on your cell phone screen. You can also get the maps on your Internet connected PC.

The Family Locator Service is another clever way to get more out of all that hidden cell phone technology. As you may or may not know, any cell phone you buy now has a GPS navigation receiver built-in. Amazing, but true. The Nav systems you get for your car are bulky monsters and need a little magnetic antenna on the roof with a wire run through the window. Handheld GPS receivers for hiking have been getting smaller, but some are still more than a handful. Yet soldered on the circuit board in your cell phone is all the circuitry and antenna needed to pick up multiple global positioning satellites and tell the phone system exactly where you are.

The impetus for this technology has been E911, also known as enhanced 911 service. When you call 911 from your home phone, authorities know exactly where you are even if you can't speak. Axe murderer in the house? No problem. You don't have to make a peep. Just dial 911 and leave the phone off the hook. The cops will get there. They know where to come because every traditional phone line has a unique pair of wires that connect it to the local phone office.

Cell phones have been trickier simply because there are no wires and, consequently, no permanent connection. When you make a call, you are basically renting the next available radio channel until you hang up. As you move, you get assigned a new channel from the tower that is picking up your signal the strongest. Until the advent of GPS phones, the best the system could do is say that you were closest to this tower or that one. Now they know your location to a matter of a few feet.

Why invest in this amazing location ability and then let it lie dormant for emergency calls only? That's what the cell phone companies have been thinking. LBS or Location Based Services are a huge potential new market for technology that has already been bought and paid for. Nextel has been a leader in making the GPS capabilities of its phones visible to the user. Early features let you get your longitude and latitude wherever you happened to be. Next, maps were included. Now, phones like the Motorola i710 or the ruggedized Motorola i560 come with TeleNav software that gives you driving directions as well as maps as an add-on service.

The Sprint Nextel Family Locator works on 17 models of phones for parents and 30 models of phones for children.

Another competing idea is the cell phone designed specifically for kids, like the Verizon Migo or Cingular Firefly. These phones don't have the parental locating feature, but do have one-button calling for mom, dad, or the authorities.

Are You a Cell Phone Boor?

You're just trying to enjoy your spaghetti and have a nice quite conversation when it starts up again.

"Jerry, you better get over here. I don't have all day. Oh, and don't forget to bring some extra cash. I'm out."

"Right, dad. I'm on the way."

What was that loud interruption? Something over the public address system? No, it's the guy two booths away on his speakerphone. Yeah, you can hear both sides of the conversation because this jerk has the phone sitting on the table as if he's the boss in his office commanding his minions. Sadly, he probably doesn't even realize that everybody in the restaurant gets to hear the conversation because he's talking louder than usual and has the volume of the phone speaker up. Even more sadly, he probably doesn't even care.

Obnoxious cell phone use is the new obscene public behavior. No, you're not just the unlucky victim of a random act of cell phone obnoxiousness. It's now epidemic. A recent news poll found that 9 out of 10 people say they encounter others using their cellular phones in an annoying way. A full 90% are pointing their fingers at the other 90% to complain. It seems likely that all 90% believe themselves to be part of the other 10% who are kind and courteous.

What gets on people's nerves the most? One problem is that people tend to talk louder on their cell phones than they otherwise do. That might be fixed technically by adding some side tone or voice feedback from the microphone to the earpiece so you can hear your own voice at a higher volume. That could prove to be a gentler solution than encouraging everybody else in the room to join in a chorus of "SHUT UP."

I'm finding it curious that about half the shoppers in the grocery store are on the phone while they pick through the shelves. Trying to get a consensus on dinner? Forget which subtle flavor of mustard to buy? There must only be a hundred. This really isn't too annoying unless they park their cart on one side of the aisle and then stand in the other side yacking for ten minutes while totally blocking the aisle. With Bluetooth headsets proliferating, you often don't know that someone's on the phone unless you look closely. They just seem to be standing there mumbling to the voices in their heads. Do you really want to risk interrupting them?

About 28 percent of cell phone users readily admit that don't drive as safely as they should because they are using their cell phone. Just observing cars while I'm sitting at stoplights, I'd say there is another 28 percent who think they are fully capable of steering a car while holding a cell phone in one hand and a cigarette in the other. Should you be concerned? Take a good look at that teenager in daddy's Yukon barreling toward you while they argue with their mother on the cell phone. Be VERY afraid.

Ringing phones in movie theaters have become such a problem that theater owners are trying to find a way to legally jam them. The FCC is taking a dim view of electronic jamming, but don't be surprised if the next theater in your town just happens to be built with lead-lined walls.

So, how about yourself? Are you a considerate cell phone user? Like bad breath and hostile driving habits, just being aware of how you are affecting other people goes a long way to solving the problem. If you are doing your part, enjoy a quiet thank you from the rest of us. Then go ahead and treat yourself to a new cell phone.

Or you can just say a number and the phone will push the buttons for you.

Speaker independent voice recognition technology isn't unique to the LG VX4500, but it's rare in cell phones you can get for free. Download others if you wish, along with graphics and games. This phone supports the BREW application platform.

The LG VX4500 supports mobile Web browsing, text messaging and multimedia messaging. It has a large phone book capable of holding 499 entries. You can have 5 numbers and 3 email addresses for each name in your book.
